BBC Radio 1

Role: Lead Developer

The BBC Radio 1 redevelopment project was completed and launched on 12th October 2006. As lead developer I coordinated the development process including rapid prototyping design methodologies and iterative interactive wireframing. The site was user tested and then built in XHTML, CSS and JavaScript and built to BBC standards.

I made use of a new department XML aggregation system to allow full separation of design, content, and interaction layers. Many parts of the new website were built using XML/XSL transforms. This has made content management easier.

The site uses accessible, inline JavaScript popups for additional options, for example on the Listen Live link near the top. It also uses Flash applications driven by xml linked to BBC systems, such as the SMS Text Message cloud, displaying popular words from recent incoming text messages to Radio 1, and the photo gallery thumbnail strip which shows recent images from the Radio 1 photo gallery tool. These tools provide alternative navigation routes into deep content within the site.

Update: The Radio 1 website won a webby in the 2007 annual awards.

Please note: The source code from the Radio 1 website contains many errors as well as broken links and old-fashioned code. This is generated by the BBC's templating system and beyond my control. It's not a refection of how I write markup!
